Among others, the goals of Project Proa are to source, construct and launch Chamorro Proa canoes using native materials and traditional canoe building techniques. Serving as an anchor for the surging interest in Guam’s culture and traditions, the projects include community outreach and education, apprentice training, and development of local and visitor destination programs related to the proa, such as seafaring festivals and canoe and paddling events.
Guam’s Chamorro Proa will live on the sea. It will travel, as indigenous Chamorros did from island to island, representing Guam at regional seafaring and cultural festivals as the most technologically advanced vessel of its time, a Pacific marvel.
